Lobe Sex Toy

From Lobe Project
Lobe was conceived during the opportunity to work on the first project that was truly my own. I had been studying the intersection between sexuality vs. physical disabilities for my thesis and unraveled a universe in which I am still very much absorbed: The sex toy industry. What started as a technical study in the ergonomics of sex toys lead to a thorough examination of such industry, understanding why sex toys and the sex industry in general contribute to sex and gender biases.

When we analyse the Sex Toy market, we see much of the same. Most of the toys being sold are geared towards genitaliae and focus on a very specific gender maket. Toys for females suggest penetration or clitorial stimulation, toys for males suggest either anal penetration or pleasure for the phallus. Where, then, can we find solutions that cater to trans folk, folk with physical disabilities and folk who have survived through sexual trauma? These were the main groups I considered as users when working on this project. I wanted to offer people like me other options of pleasure that didn’t focus on their genitals. I wanted to give people the gift of regaining touch with their sexuality, or at least feel like their sexual preferences were being considered. When talking with people with physical disabilities, for instance, I heard that they are often seen as asexual or out of touch with their own sexuality. I wanted them to feel like they are sexy, just as much as we can all be sexy.

Lobe is a Sex Toy you wear on your ear and it offers 3 kinds of stimulation: Heat, Sound and Vibration. The small speaker contained in the area by the Tragus can be connected via Bluetooth to a phone call, a sound, a song or any form of digital audio.

It’s charging dock offers induction charging via magnet, as well as an “upward” shape which makes it easy for users with limited hand movement to pick it up and put it on.

One of Lobe’s possibility for control is via it’s wifi-technology remote. The gestures used to control the remote (such as swiping, pressing and squeezing) speak back to an already inherent form of interface.

Another form of control is via Lobe’s smartphone App, which I myself have developed. The App ensures full control of the device, as well as “Heartbeat mode” where you can let the pulse sensor contained in the device capture your heartbeat pattern and let the device follow it as control. The more excited you become, the more intense each feature becomes. The App also features a personalised “sex library” where the user can gather erotic literature, sex toy shopping lists and suggestions, as well as porn suggestions.
